Your baby’s first birthday is a moment to celebrate. Your tiny newborn has become a curious, mobile little person  and as you look around the house, you’ll notice something else too: a surprising amount of baby gear that quietly stopped being used months ago.

Most infant gear has a very short active lifespan. Some items retire as early as 3–6 months. Yet they continue to take up space, collect dust, and quietly become clutter. This guide will help you identify what your baby has likely outgrown, what’s still worth holding onto, what’s safe to resell, and what should go straight to donation.

Baby Gear Ready to Move On

Bassinets, Cradles, and Jhulas These are typically outgrown between 3–5 months, once your baby starts rolling or pushing up. Most bassinets are designed for use only until the baby is about 3 to 6 months of age, and once a baby can sit up independently, it’s time to stop using them entirely. Jhulas, while beloved in Indian households, become a fall risk as babies gain mobility. Rather than letting these become a dumping ground for other clutter, resell or donate them — they are in high demand among parents of newborns.

Infant Car Seats Once your baby hits the weight or height limit (usually around 9–12 months), it’s time to move to a convertible car seat. Car seats generally expire between 6 and 10 years from the date of manufacture, so storing an infant seat for your next child can be risky — by the time you need it again, it may have passed its expiry. You can resell a seat that hasn’t been in any accidents and is well within its manufacturer’s validity period. When in doubt, check the label on the base or back of the seat.

Bouncers and Infant Swings These are among the earliest items to be retired — most babies stop needing them well before the one-year mark. Most babies stop using a swing somewhere between 6 and 9 months, often because they’ve hit a weight limit, started sitting up, or simply lost interest. Once your baby can sit or roll independently, a reclined swing becomes a tipping hazard. Before reselling, check that the harness is intact and all parts are functional. momcozy

Play Gyms Play gyms get heavy use in the first few months when babies are on their backs exploring the world above them. By the time your baby is sitting, crawling, and pulling to stand, the play gym has lost its appeal. They are easy to clean and resell, and are consistently popular among parents of younger babies.

Playpens (Small Infant Versions) A playpen is helpful during the sitting-up and early crawling phase. The moment your baby begins to gain significant mobility — a deliberate push-up, a tentative roll, or the strength to attempt to sit upright — enclosed infant gear transitions from a comforting aid to an inherent hazard. Once your baby starts pulling to stand and figures out how to climb, a small playpen simply won’t contain them anymore. Time to pass it on.

Baby Walkers Walkers arguably have the shortest active lifespan of any baby gear. Most babies use them for just a few weeks during the pre-walking phase, and once they take their first independent steps, the walker is forgotten entirely. If it’s still in good condition, it’s very easy to resell.

Infant Bath Seats Once your baby has the core strength to sit unsupported — usually around 6–8 months — you can move to a regular baby bathtub or tub insert. The infant bath seat can be cleaned, dried, and listed for resale.

Toys and Clothing

By the first birthday, you’ll have a full wardrobe of 0–12M clothing, most of which was worn only a handful of times before being outgrown. The same goes for early toys like rattles, soft sensory toys, and newborn mobiles.

Keep a few meaningful pieces as memorabilia. For the rest: 0–12M baby clothing resells quickly because it’s barely used. Bundle items by size range for easier listings.

Important: Teethers and items that have been heavily mouthed are generally not recommended for resale if they can’t be thoroughly sanitised. Use your judgment — if it can’t be cleaned well, it’s better to dispose of it responsibly.

Gear That Still Has Years of Life Left

Strollers If your baby has been using a stroller regularly, it will continue to be useful well into the toddler years — especially during outings, travel, and any time your toddler is tired mid-trip. A good stroller is worth maintaining.

Convertible Car Seats Depending on the model, a convertible car seat can be used from infancy up to age 4 or beyond. This is a worthwhile long-term investment and does not need to be replaced at the one-year mark.

Baby Carriers and Hip Seats Most baby carriers are designed for use up to 2–4 years. Many parents naturally transition from a full carrier to a hip seat around the toddler stage, as babies become heavier and more mobile. Both can serve you for some time yet.

Cribs and Toddler Beds One of the longest-lasting items in your nursery. Many crib models convert to toddler beds and can be used until age 4–5. Some convertible models can even become a child’s bed for much longer.

What Not to Resell

Not everything can or should be passed on. Avoid reselling:

  • Car seats that have been in an accident or are past their expiry date
  • Crib mattresses (safety risk due to SIDS concerns with repeated use)
  • Teethers or items that cannot be properly cleaned
  • Any item that has been recalled

When in doubt, dispose of these responsibly rather than passing on a safety risk.
