Second Hand vs New Baby Products: What's Worth Buying Used?

The categories where new matters are a small, specific list: things with a safety history you can't see, things with expiry dates, or things that will be used intensively for years.

Using this guide, most families can furnish a first child's first two years buying perhaps 70–80% of gear used and 20–30% new — and spend a fraction of what an all-new setup would cost.

Almost always worth buying used

• Clothing in all sizes — outgrown before worn out, enormous preloved supply.
• Strollers and prams — no expiry date, condition is fully visible, high retail cost.
• High chairs and bouncers — used for 6–18 months, easy to clean, well-built ones last many families.
• Baby carriers and wraps — used for a short phase; inspect buckles and stitching.
• Toys, books and puzzles — especially branded sets; high retail cost, low actual use.
• Nursery furniture — wardrobes, dressers, shelving; check hardware and finish.
• Activity gyms and play mats — inspect for tears; usually in excellent condition.
• Swings and rockers — used for only a few months; great preloved value.

Better to buy new

• Car seats — crash history is invisible, plastics expire, and the stakes are too high to guess.
• Crib mattresses — foam compresses with use and can affect safe sleep; buy new even if the crib is used.
• Helmets — protective foam degrades after any impact, which may not be visible.
• Breast pump tubing and membrane kits — these touch expressed milk and should be new even if the pump body is used.
• Feeding bottles and silicone teats — affordable new; no need to compromise.
• Anything with an unresolved safety recall you can't confirm has been fixed.

The grey area: buy used with care

• Cribs — safe to buy used if it has fixed sides, correct slat spacing and intact hardware. Avoid drop-side designs.
• Breast pumps — the motor unit can be bought used if it is a closed-system pump; check the model.
• Baby monitors — test all functions before buying.
• Bath seats and tubs — inspect for cracks; any structural damage means walk away.
